The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is moving forward with plans to construct a roundabout adjacent to Citizens State Bank’s Freeport location at the intersection of Pearl City Road and Forest Road. While the construction will take some time to complete, we will still maintain the same hours of operation for the convenience of our customers.
IDOT completed studies and road surveys last year that determined that drivers using the intersection were at higher risks of accidents due in part to increased traffic traveling to and from the nearby Super Walmart. Planners eventually settled on constructing the traffic roundabout to both alleviate traffic delays and reduce the number and severity of potential accidents.
An article published in the June 7 issue of the Freeport Journal Standard outlines a timetable for the project, with the bulk of the work taking place between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. IDOT is expected to shut down the intersection for construction during that time. It’s anticipated that the road will reopen by December 1st; improvements to the roadway will be put off until the weather warms up in Spring, 2014.
The City of Freeport is currently posting updates about the project on this page within their website. Scroll down the page until you see the entry titled “Pearl City Road, Kiwanis Drive and Forest Road Intersection Improvements.” It currently includes links to a summary about the project; there’s also a Youtube video produced by the project developer, Ourston Roundabout Engineering, showing an animated simulation of what traffic will look like once construction is completed. Engineers with the City of Freeport intend to add diagrams detailing access routes for businesses within the construction zone, including for Citizens State Bank.
